Are You Health Conscientious? (no, that’s not a typo)

Everyday there seems to be more and more of us that are growing health conscious. Taking vitamins, eating local healthy & quality foods, staying fit, the list goes on.  All of these things, we’re doing because we care about ourselves and our families.

Why do so many focus on staying healthy? Because, they see the positive results when they do these things and the negative results when they don’t. Despite our determination to keep ourselves and our families healthy, there is one thing however that may be missing. Something we may have never even thought about. Here’s a riddle and see if you can figure it out before I spill the beans and tell you the answer. Okay, I am something you can’t live without, you need me every minute of every day and I am invisible. Sometimes I’m dirty and sometimes I’m clean but a lot of times you won’t even know the difference. What am I…Don’t read ahead! Are you stumped? Okay, I’ll tell you. I’m the air you breathe!

We all need to breathe. It’s a vital part of life. We rely on organizations like the EPA to protect us as much as possible through federal and state regulations on air pollutants. There’s not much we can do about that the air that we breathe outside. Where there seemingly is no regulation however is in our home and most of the time at our place of work. As a matter of fact, studies of our exposure to air pollutants by the EPA indicate that levels of indoor pollutants may be 2 to 5 times and in some instances more than 100 times higher than outdoor pollutant levels. Indoor air pollutants are ranked among the top five environmental risks to our health. The problems they cause can be very subtle and don’t always produce easily recognizable or immediate impacts on our health.

“Well what can I do?” You may ask yourself. There are air purifiers you can buy for your home, office or car. Those may help but it’s not getting to the root of the problem. It’s kind of like taking cholesterol medication so you can still eat fried chicken and pizza 3 or 4 night s a week. The best thing to do would be to filter out high cholesterol foods from your diet completely. You like what I did there? “Filter out”? Well I thought it was funny! So, we can do the same thing about the air we breathe in our homes and in our workplace. Any reputable company should be willing to come out and check your ventilation system for you at no charge to ensure that the air everyone is breathing is safe now and for the long haul. The company I work for is one of many in the area that will help ensure that the air you’re breathing indoors is contributing to the health and wellness you are already working hard to achieve. Just a reminder though, if the price sounds too good to be true, it usually is. There are a lot of scams going on out there. The average cost from a specialist will usually start at around $400 and up depending on the number of units, vents, etc.  Please do yourself, your family and your employees a favor and get your system checked by a trained professional. Be more than just health conscious. Be health conscientious! It doesn’t hurt to “air” on the side of caution. Sorry, I couldn’t resist!
