Maybe it’s because I was an adventurer in my past life. Maybe it’s because I love to torture myself. Or maybe it’s because I’m coming up on my 40th birthday and am hitting the much talked about mid-life crisis. I say this because I have set for myself the goal of completing four obstacle races next year: Spartan Race, Savage Race, Civilian Military Combine and Alpha Warrior. Yes, these are the craze and each one is a test of not only your physical well-being but also your mental fortitude. From past experience it would be ill-advised to take on one of these challenges without properly preparing for each one, more so for four of them. Since the mind is pretty much set on these (you just DON’T just wake up one morning & decide to do this….if you’re like me you’ve thought about it for a few months), the other thing to do is to make sure that your body is physically equipped to handle the stresses the courses will bring: wall climbs, rope climbs, cargo net climbing, running through mud just to name a few. Best way to prepare for them is to work out and challenge your body. The better prepared you are, the better chance you’ll have to complete them & walk away from them like a boss.
This is also true for your workout routine at the gym/studio that you attend. You don’t go in thinking of just going through the motions….right?? Of course not! You go in full mode. You go in wanting to take care of business. You’re going in with a mission in mind: to achieve your ideal perfect physique. And with that, you’re also wondering this: what is the perfect workout to get there?
Now I’ve heard many ask me “T, how can I achieve this? What‘s the perfect workout to get to my goals?” You’re hoping that I’ll have the answer to the highly elusive, PERFECT workout. Don’t lie, you know you are. You’re hoping I’ll tell you that I have a workout which will prepare you for not only an obstacle course race but to also help you achieve your fitness goals/dreams. Well, I’m sorry for what I’m about to tell you.
Unfortunately, there is no so-called perfect workout to prepare you for this or any other fitness goals you have in sight. And I know this is a hard pill to swallow, especially with all the information that’s out there today promising to be the perfect solution. Trust me, I too have been a victim of the fitness fads out there and I think I’ve tried just about everything possible and every diet possible just to see how it would work. And like many of you out there, I’ve had some good results and I’ve had some bad results. I’ve gone through the ups and downs, the triumphs and defeats. Well I’m here to help shed some light on what you all are looking for.
The most important thing here is to not look for the perfect workout, but for the perfect BALANCE of workouts. What I do for my boot campers and clients is to incorporate some form of cardio (such as sprints, running, jump rope, etc.) with a weight training regimen or bodyweight exercises to build a good strength and endurance foundation that will be beneficial to your goals. I know that you’ve been told that if you want to lose weight you have to do hours of cardio or that if you want to build muscle mass you have to lift for hours. Not totally true. There are numerous studies out there (one of which was done at the Mayo Clinic Hospital) today that verify that doing excessive cardio will not burn fat as effective as a combination of short cardio/sprint routines and weight training. Now I KNOW I’ve just made a few of you drop your jaws open & I totally understand. And I know some of you are afraid of “getting big” from lifting weights. Don’t be afraid. As I said before, BALANCE is the key here. A good balance of the two will ensure that you’ll get to your fitness goals in an effective manner. If you don’t know how to start or what you should do, feel free to contact me. I’ve worked with heavy duty weight trainers. I’ve worked with distance runners. And who knows…..maybe I’ll see you next to me in one of my bucket list races.
Work it….Live it….OWN IT!!!
